Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council, has died. He was 74 years old.
The news of the death was released by the UAE Ministry of Presidential Affairs. A 40-day official mourning period has been declared in the UAE following his death. The UAE's official news agency said in a statement that it extends its condolences to the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic states and the world on the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It was officially confirmed by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs on Friday afternoon. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected President of the United Arab Emirates in 2004 following the death of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Father of the Nation and the first UAE President.

Born in 1948, the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He has been instrumental in nation-building since becoming President of the UAE. The UAE has witnessed rapid development under the rule of Sheikh Khalifa. His aim was to continue the path established by his father Sheikh Zayed.
