DUBAI: India under new captain Rohit Sharma are nine points behind Australia in the ICC's annual Test rankings released on Wednesday after a stellar performance at home to the world number one T20I team for the 2021-22 season.
The 'Black Caps' from New Zealand ended last season as the world number one ODI team on May 4, 2022. The England-India series, which started in 2021, will once again be included in the rankings. The last test that was postponed is over.
"After today's annual update, Australia has increased its lead from one to nine in the ICC men's Test team rankings, from nine to Pakistan, and Pakistan to five, overtaking England," the ICC said in a statement.
"India also moved up one point to 119. With the 4-1 series win over India in 2018, England dropped the biggest drop of nine points and are now out of the rankings. England's 88 rating points are the lowest since 1995." Release added.
Australia, who beat England 4-0 in the Ashes in January, have moved from 119 to 128 rating points in the 2018-19 season, reflecting all the series they have completed since May 2019. Series completed before May 2021 now weigh 50 percent and subsequent series 100 percent.
India remain top of the T20I, extending their lead from one to five over second-placed England. South Africa and Australia now overtake New Zealand in sixth place. Similarly, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are now ahead of Afghanistan (10).
In the updated ODI rankings, New Zealand remain in first place, but their lead against England has been reduced by one point from three. The gap between England and third-placed Australia rose from seven to 17 points.
