DUBLIN: You should be aware of the housing crisis before international students move to Ireland. The report suggests that some students have no choice but to return home after completing courses because of the potential for poor sleep in Ireland. As the housing crisis continues, international students in Ireland are being forced to sleep roughly.
The Irish Council for International Students (ICIS) warns that international students are "particularly at risk" amid reports that students taking various courses, including English, are forced to sleep on the street, in cars or half-bed. "We did a survey last February and found there was a lot of congestion - especially for English-speaking students," she says. “The survey found that more than half of students share a room with three or more people and one in ten shares a room with six or more people.
"So, congestion is as big a problem as substandard accommodation, and, of course, the lack of accommodation - the lack of affordable accommodation."
They said the situation was "a sign of a wider housing crisis" - but that language students were "particularly at risk" when it came to house hunting. Students coming to this country need clearer advice on rental conditions, so no one should be under the illusion that it will be easier to find a place to stay, especially English-speaking students with language barriers, and we need to be at the forefront and clear with them before they arrive. "It simply came to our notice then. They commented that urban areas such as Dublin, Cork and Galway were "particularly in crisis".
New figures from the Residential Tenancy Board (RTB) last week show that rents have risen 100% over the past decade. New tenants' rents rose 9% in the last quarter of 2021.
