Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, on Thursday said that Rs 363 crore has been earmarked for the world's largest film revival project under the National Film Heritage Mission. Thakur explained that about 2200 Indian films will be restored under the National Film Heritage Mission.
Committees of filmmakers, documentary filmmakers, film historians and producers have already shortlisted the names of the films for their revision on the basis of language, Thakur told the media. In addition, he said, the National Film Heritage Mission also deals with the ongoing conservation processes of film quality assessment, defense protection and digitization. It is one of the largest film preservation missions in the world.
"Not only films, but also very important short documentaries from the collections of the NFAI and the Film Division, as well as other rare material, including the pre - independence era, will be restored to give the new generation a holistic view of India," he said. The sound of all 2200 films will be restored using high-tech and many negative pops, hisses, crackles and distortions will be removed as negative digital in the sound. Once restored, all movies will be well preserved digitally.
Explaining the importance of the revival project of over 2200 films, the Minister said that the revival of Indian cinema would once again give present and future generations a chance to revive the glory of old evergreen Indian cinema.
The official statement said that NFAI has undertaken the revival of 10 of Satyajit Ray's prestigious films and they will be screened at various international film festivals later.
