Geneva: WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said the decision to change the name was taken in the wake of global protests, calling it "defamatory and discriminatory".
The World Health Organization has said it will rename monkeypox to avoid discrimination and stigmatisation as the virus continues to spread among people in an unprecedented global outbreak of the disease.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director general, said the organisation was “working with partners and experts from around the world on changing the name of the monkeypox virus, its clades and the disease it causes”.
The move comes after scientists called for an “urgent” change to the name which they described as “inaccurate”, “discriminatory” and “stigmatising” in a report released last week. An announcement on the new name would be made “as soon as possible”, said Tedros.
The name Monkey Pox is misunderstood globally. Health experts around the world have called for the name to be changed. He said talks to change the name were ongoing and the World Health Organization would announce the new names as soon as possible.
Scabies is widespread. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization will meet on June 23 to decide whether to declare a health emergency. Health experts will also attend the meeting. The meeting will assess the spread of the disease outside African countries.
Monkeypox has been confirmed in European countries such as the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Belgium, as well as the United States, Canada and Australia.
The World Health Organization says there is no need for mass vaccination against monkey flu. The WHO recommends that only health workers, laboratory staff working with orthopedic viruses, and clinical laboratory officials who diagnose monkeypox be vaccinated.
Experts say monkeypox is an airborne disease like corona. The majority of cases were reported in close contact with an infected patient or animal.
