The OIC is an intergovernmental organization of Muslim-dominated member states, including Pakistan. India has often condemned the OIC for commenting on the country's internal affairs, such as those related to Jammu and Kashmir. The OIC describes itself as the "collective voice of the Muslim world".
Nupur Sharma, a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), made the remarks in a televised debate last month, which was interpreted as insulting the Muslim religion. Both leaders apologized and the party suspended them and expelled Jindal.
"The BJP strongly condemns the insult to any religious person of any religion. It is against any ideology that insults or denigrates any sect or religion. The BJP does not encourage such people or philosophy," the statement said.
Earlier, the BJP had rejected Nupur's remarks, saying it strongly condemned the insult to any religious figure. Following the suspension, Nupur Sharma withdrew the controversial remark. Nupur explained that he did not intend to hurt anyone's religious feelings and made the reference when his faith was hurt. She said she would withdraw her statement if it hurt anyone.
Meanwhile, Naveen Jindal, media chief of the party's Delhi unit, had posted a tweet on the issue. The comments - especially by Ms. Sharma - have angered the country's Muslim minority and led to sporadic protests in some states. In the reference, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came out with a critique of the BJP. Rahul Gandhi also came forward and said that India was isolated due to the BJP's shame
The controversy was sparked by a major clash in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. As protests intensified, the BJP suspended national spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. References do not repeat.
The world demanded that India be publicly reprimanded. More Gulf states and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif took the opportunity to protest.

Oman Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalili said in a statement that he could not accept the statement of a spokesman for the ruling party in India. The Pakistani Prime Minister has called on the world community to give publicity and said that the rights of Muslims in India are being violated. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the party's disciplinary action against BJP leaders for making controversial statements will not be resolved.
The Arab League, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan and Oman came out in protest against India. The Arab League, a coalition of 22 Arab nations, has called for action against the ongoing atrocities against Muslims in India. Qatar had also summoned the Indian ambassador to protest the incident. Following the criticism, there was a widespread campaign to boycott imports from India to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
