Ireland: A prison van was attacked by a gang in Monaghan, a border county in Ireland, to free prisoners.
The Garda investigation began after a group of prisoners tried to break into a prison service van. The van, which was transporting four inmates back to jail after being produced in court, was attacked in County Monaghan this evening.
Sources say a car crashed into a van while traveling on the road between Monaghan and Castleblayney near the border with Northern Ireland County, Armagh. The guard believes the group tried to knock down the van on the road and rescue one of the prisoners inside - but was unsuccessful. The car used by the group was later found on fire near the border.
"The Garda in Monaghan is now the site of a hit-and-run road traffic collision on Wednesday evening, June 15, 2022. The Irish prison escort van collided with a car. No injuries have been reported. The road is currently closed, local diversions are underway. Investigations are ongoing.
An important search for the group continued through the night, with the Guard using one of the Force's helicopters to locate them. However, no arrests have been made so far. A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service said it was aware of the incident and was investigating.
