IRELAND: People frustrated with fuel prices; Urges people to cut back on food; Several people left the vehicle;

Dublin: Rising fuel prices are forcing people to cut back on food. So they can refuel cars. Thousands of people cut back on buying their groceries to refuel their cars.

Things are getting to a very worrying level when it comes to fuel costs, and the survey shows that these fuel costs are affecting other areas of family life, such as food shopping and family activities.

The price of a liter of motor fuel has crossed € 2.20 in many counties, and the high price is causing great inconvenience to motorists. One in 10 motorists switches from using a vehicle to walking. People can use public transportation, walking and cycling wherever they can, but everyone knows that this is not always possible in rural areas where public transportation options are limited.

The record high price of petrol and diesel means that one-third of people now spend more than 100 euros a month to refill their cars, according to a new AA Ireland survey.

  • Petrol prices have risen 11.5 % in the past two weeks, from an average of 1.91 euros per liter to 2.13 euros, according to the survey. It is 41 % more than last year and 66% more than two years ago.
  • Diesel prices are 45 % higher than last year, from 1. 1.41 euros per liter to 2.05 euros.

An AA Ireland survey of more than 4,200 drivers revealed that 27 per cent of respondents struggled to refuel their petrol vehicles and another 34 per cent their diesel vehicles. That means spending more than 100 euros a month on fuel. The survey was conducted in early June but then prices rose again. This means it costs around 108 euros to fill up a petrol car based on current prices.

To help cut costs, 37 percent want to reduce VAT. Others want to cut carbon taxes and further cut excise duty. A quarter of Irish people are demanding the removal of all taxes on fuel to help consumers cope with soaring prices.

The 2.20 liters of fuel at the pumps are subject to approximately 90c taxes and levies. One-third of people want to bring in a temporary price cap. Others want more incentives to buy electric vehicles.
