In a recent study of more than 5,000 vehicles, the RSA found that three-quarters of the drivers observed were speeding in the 50 km / h zone.

Speaking at the campaign launch in Galway, Ast. Minister of Transport Hildegard Newton said the findings were worrying.

These are speed zones rich in pedestrians and cyclists, ”she said. “One of the key priorities of the new government road safety strategy is to reduce the risk to dangerous road users in these speed zones and to promote safe and green active travel.

“For example, we review speed limits and the possibility of a large roll-out of 30km / h speed zones, as well as a review of speed-related penalties.

“The latest in vehicle safety assist technology such as Intelligent Speed Assistance and the roll out of average speed cameras will help prevent speed-related accidents.

"While all of these activities are important for slowing down our roads, it is important to remember that we as individuals and the community all have a shared responsibility to slow down and protect us and other road users."

In the last five years, the number of people killed or seriously injured in collisions during the June bank holidays has risen to 90. So far this year, 70 people have died on Irish roads, an increase of 26 deaths over the same period last year. In the latest RSA study, 77% of deaths occurred on rural roads.
