British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party.
Amid Buzz of Boris Johnson Quitting Today
'Sad to leave the best job in the world': Boris Johnson announced his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party in a speech, saying he wanted to achieve balance because he believed talent would be spread more evenly. He said he tried to convince his colleagues that it would be strange to change the leader. But he has failed to convince them, he admits - the party has a "broad mandate" but is "only a handful of points behind in the polls". "No one is remotely indispensable" in politics, he said. He added that a "Darwinian" electoral system would produce a new leader. "I know there will be people who are disappointed," he said. "I am sad to leave the best job in the world," he said.
Johnson said he was elected with the largest majority since 1987 and the largest vote share since 1979. He said he would remain prime minister until a successor was appointed and began appointing new ministers to his cabinet, including a third education secretary, within three days.
Boris Johnson was booed outside 10 Downing Street as he announced his resignation as Prime Minister.
