Tehran: Five
people were killed and 84 injured in three earthquakes measuring above 6 in
Iran's southern province of Hormozgan, semi-official Fars news agency quoted
and emergency official as saying.
The first
6.1-magnitude quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, followed by two strong quakes
of up to 6.3 magnitudes a few hours later. Several aftershocks with magnitudes
above 4 were also recorded. The earthquakes damaged some houses in rural areas,
destroyed several bridges and overpasses, and caused landslides on roads.
Mokhtar Salashur,
CEO of the Red Crescent Society in Hormozgan province, said the rescue
operation had ended and people had been sheltered in emergency shelters and
tents and relief materials had been distributed.
