Tehran: Five people were killed and 84 injured in three earthquakes measuring above 6 in Iran's southern province of Hormozgan, semi-official Fars news agency quoted and emergency official as saying.

The first 6.1-magnitude quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, followed by two strong quakes of up to 6.3 magnitudes a few hours later. Several aftershocks with magnitudes above 4 were also recorded. The earthquakes damaged some houses in rural areas, destroyed several bridges and overpasses, and caused landslides on roads.

Mokhtar Salashur, CEO of the Red Crescent Society in Hormozgan province, said the rescue operation had ended and people had been sheltered in emergency shelters and tents and relief materials had been distributed.
