ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered authorities to transfer jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail to Islamabad's Shifa International Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
The directive from a three-member apex court bench follows mounting alarms raised by his legal team and family regarding his deteriorating physical condition, which medical reports attributed to severe stress, anxiety, palpitations, and elevated blood pressure.
Medical Board and Family Access Granted
Under the court's instructions, Khan is to be moved to the private medical facility within 48 hours to remain under observation. The bench additionally ordered the formation of an oversight medical board that includes his personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court ruled that Khan must be granted regular weekly access to family members and communication privileges with his sons abroad, addressing prolonged complaints regarding his isolation in detention.
Ongoing Legal and Political Turmoil
The 73-year-old former cricket star has been imprisoned since August 2023 following a string of convictions stemming from his ouster in a 2022 parliamentary no-confidence vote. Khan and his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have consistently maintained that the prosecutions are politically motivated.
While prison authorities recently submitted filings claiming his health was stable, mounting concerns over his blood pressure and overall well-being prompted the intervention by the country's highest court.
