During the first six months of this year, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) seized nearly 500,000 units of illegal drugs from Ireland. The drugs seized included sedative drugs, anabolic steroids and erectile dysfunction drugs, the HPRA said.
28 percent of the 486,088 units overall that were seized were sedative medications (137,587 units). 41,635 units of erectile dysfunction medications and 59,764 units of anabolic steroids were seized. Among the items taken are 33,542 units of painkillers and 43,707 units of unlawful prescription drugs.
As a consequence of a concentrated investigation into websites that sell such medications online, HPRA has taken action against 287 websites and social media pages. Additionally, the HPRA reported that fewer illegal narcotics were seized this year than they were last year.
HPRA director Grainne Power said people had no idea what they were getting when they bought drugs from illegal sellers. They said that in addition to the losses caused by buying spurious drugs at high prices, such drugs can cause serious side effects. She said that people are not aware about the ingredients contained in these medicines and about the health problems that can occur when they are taken along with other medicines.
