NEW DELHI — The death toll in the catastrophic collapse of a multi-storey building in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan area has risen to six, with rescue teams pulling multiple survivors and victims from the wreckage during intensive overnight operations. The 50-year-old structure, which operated as a boys' paying guest (PG) accommodation near Delhi University’s South Campus, caved in around 1.30 pm on Sunday while repair and renovation work was reportedly underway in the basement.
Multi-agency rescue operations—involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, local police, and disaster management teams—have successfully rescued 11 individuals, who were rushed to nearby medical facilities including the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Authorities fear that several more students and residents remain trapped beneath the heavy concrete slabs and twisted steel, prompting responders to deploy canine squads, heavy excavation equipment, and oxygen cylinders into the debris.
In response to the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and announced a formal magisterial inquiry into the structural failure. Local police have registered an FIR against the building owner and other responsible parties under strict legal provisions, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated severe punitive measures, ordering the immediate sealing of unauthorized vertical expansions and dangerous properties across the locality as oversight into unregulated urban construction intensifies.
