Dublin: Banks have been charged with utilising deceptive methods to compel clients to use internet services.
According to the Financial Services Union, banks are purposefully implementing policies to entice customers away from cash and traditional brick-and-mortar banking.
It has been asserted that banks employed a variety of cunning strategies under the guise of Covid to close branches and force customers to pay with digital platforms rather than cash.
To encourage customers to conduct their banking online, banks are allegedly accused of not returning calls, understaffing their branches, causing long lines, and delaying the repair of malfunctioning ATMs.
The Financial Services Union (FSU) said that banks were actively attempting to wean individuals off of cash transactions and traditional brick-and-mortar banking.
The FSU said in a submission to the Government's assessment of retail banking that banks are failing individual customers, small businesses, and their employees.
The FSU claimed that the removal of ATMs from several branches and the sale of hundreds of ATMs to private operators demonstrate banks' lack of interest in providing for their clients.
A survey conducted by the Department of Finance that found 58 percent of respondents believe banking services have gotten worse since the crash was cited in the FSU proposal.
FSU general secretary John O’Connell said: “The banks have used Covid and the transition from it to force people on to digital platforms, whether they want to or not.
“The lack of staffing banks is chronic in banks for a reason. It creates long queues. It is the same with the phone lines.”
