"Dublin's Capel Street" has been named one of the best streets in the world

IRELAND: Capel Street in Dublin city centre has been named as one of the coolest streets in the world in a survey by global travel magazine Time Out.

The street ranked 22nd and was noted for its “whirl of culture” with “some of the best food in Dublin”.

Rue Wellington in Montreal, Canada topped the list, which ranked streets in terms of food, fun, culture and community, followed by Gertrude Street in Melbourne, Australia; Great Western Road in Glasgow, Scotland and Yongkang Street in Taipei. Time Out surveyed more than 20,000 city dwellers as well as local experts, it said.

Capel Street, the longest street in the city with no through traffic, was designated traffic-free by Dublin City Council in May of this year. During a public consultation held before the decision, the council received nearly 1,800 submissions, with 91% of them supporting the action.

The Time Out article mentions Pantibar, Poitin Bar 1661, and the "secret restaurant" White Rabbit, which is tucked away behind the checkout counters of the Super Asia Foods supermarket across the street.

It may be difficult to identify Dublin's coolest street right away, but if you spend some time here, you'll learn that Capel Street has a bustle that is unmatched in the city.

"Neither the opulent stores on Grafton Street nor the tourist-trap bars in Temple Bar can be found here. Instead, you'll discover a flurry of culture and some of Dublin's best cuisine, typically served simply because the locals already know how excellent it is.

Whether it's a steaming bowl of real pho, a buzzing Moroccan restaurant with karaoke from noon until night, or breakfast at the wildly acclaimed Brother Hubbard, there is truly always something new to discover on Capel Street. Additionally, the street recently became pedestrianised, making it the ideal location for relaxing and just hanging out while enjoying a beer.

Caroline Conroy, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, expressed her "pleasure" that Capel Street made the list.
