Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had to resign due to protests in Sri Lanka, is reportedly trying to settle in the United States. The country faced a big crisis due to financial crisis. Due to this there were nation-wide protests led by the people. Rajapaksa was forced to resign last month as the protests intensified. After leaving the country, he is now trying to get a green card for permanent residence in the United States with his wife and son, Daily Mirror reported.

Last month, Rajapaksa's attorneys in the US began the procedure for applying for a green card. Eoma Rajapakse, his wife, is an American citizen. Rajapaksa is therefore more likely to be granted a green card.

Rajapakse, who left the country after resigning as president, is staying in a hotel in Thailand with his wife and son. They will return to Sri Lanka on August 25. The plan of Rajapakse and his family was to stay in Thailand at least till November.

Rajapakse had a conversation with the attorneys two days ago. He has made the decision to go back to Sri Lanka in response to their advice. According to attorneys, Rajapakse shouldn't remain in Thailand owing to security concerns. Additionally, they advised that it would be best to go back to Sri Lanka by the end of this month.

The former president of Sri Lanka had been asked by the Thai police to stay inside the hotel. There has still been some unrest in Sri Lanka. The demonstrators claim that the country is currently in a serious crisis as a result of the Rajapakse administration's policies. As soon as Rajapaksa arrived in Bangkok, the Thai police gave him instructions for staying in Thailand.

To ensure the security of the former Lankan president, more policemen have been deployed at the hotel where he is staying. Security is being looked after by a team of non-uniformed policemen. Rajapakse's whereabouts have not been released yet. He stays in the hotel very secretly.

The government can provide Rajapaksa with all the facilities provided to former presidents on his return to Sri Lanka. Police officers are required for protection, and State House must be permitted for occupancy. The next administration will debate the issue and make a conclusion. Rajapakse first travelled to the Maldives after his resignation. He eventually relocated to Singapore. He entered Singapore on a medical visa, which he thrice renewed. After the visa time could not be extended, the former president and his family travelled to Thailand. But as of late, he has decided to settle permanently in America.
