IRELAND: Seagull and crow attacks on the rise, homeowners warned to beware

Ireland: Crow and seagull attacks have increased. Several counties warned the public to handle seagulls and other birds with caution this month after pest controllers reported an increase in calls to deal with the birds. Since this is their nesting season, pest control companies say calls to most homes in urban areas have increased.

People are warned that these birds can be particularly aggressive in August, as they build nests and protect their young. August is usually the nesting time for birds. They can be extremely aggressive and protective of their young.

Birds are more likely to steal food from the public and disturb waste bins and packages looking for food to bring to the nest. Birds are often attracted to houses because food scraps are readily available. Tall buildings can also mimic high cliffs that traditionally nestle.

Here are steps you can take to prevent the presence of these birds in your premises:

  • Remove access to nesting sites by installing barriers on window ledges.
  • Make sure bin lids are secure and bins are not left out in the open – birds have sharp beaks that can tear bin bags.
  • Use a large bird model that can prevent the presence of pest birds.
  • Seek the advice of a professional regulatory service.

Bird droppings can also be dangerous because they contain bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella, and inhalation of bacteria from dried droppings, or through bird transmission, can spread the infection, which can infect people.

Finglas-Ballymon councilor Keith Connolly called on Dublin City Council to look into the possibility of killing the animals. Seagulls are a protected species under EU law, but exceptions can be made in certain circumstances.

People say that the noise made by birds is in itself a serious disturbance
