Cork: "Irish Water West Cork" hosepipe ban issued to protect supply for essential needs. A water conservation order banning garden hoses and other unnecessary water use will apply to 30 dispensaries in the region from midnight tonight until midnight on September 26.
The number of people affected by the water conservation order is 38,000, with 14,000 homes and businesses affected. The order follows prolonged dry weather and a huge increase in demand, which has resulted in west Cork's water supply falling to such a low level that it would take six to eight inches of rain to replenish water, according to the state-run utility company. Irish Water said.
Met Éireann is forecasting drier and hotter weather for the next two weeks, which will compound the impact on depleted water supplies. Irish water is currently tankering water to three water supplies in partnership with Cork Council, with the possibility of tankering to additional supplies in west Cork within the next fortnight.
"As demand continues to outstrip supply in West Cork and more drier weather is forecast, we have taken the additional step of implementing a water conservation order to protect local water supplies." Irish Water says west Cork has received 30mm compared to other places such as Sligo with just 7mm. The historically low rainfall has affected water levels in the Cross.
Conserving water now is especially important as the weather forecast is for continued dry weather over the next few weeks. It is very important that we really take care of the remaining water for essential services in the coming weeks, which is why people are being asked to conserve water now. Irish Water announced.
