Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that Canada will impose sanctions on Iran's morality police and its leadership, including those responsible for the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.
"We've seen Iran's disregard for human rights time after time, and now we're seeing the death of Mahza Amini and the crackdown on protests," Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa.
Moments earlier, Trudeau's foreign minister, Melanie Joly, had made comparable claims during her address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. "Today, I'm announcing that we will implement sanctions on dozens of individuals and entities, including Iran's so-called morality police," Trudeau said.
Amini was detained after allegedly disobeying the headscarf law, and she passed away on September 16. Her family has disputed the Iranian police's claim that she suffered a heart attack and died as a result.
According to officials, Iran has detained more than 1,200 demonstrators in its brutal crackdown on ten nights of unrest sparked by outrage over the killing of Amini.
At least 41 people have been killed as Iran has heavily deployed security forces against nationwide demonstrations sparked by the death.
