Coveney approves €2m for UN funding for Palestine refugees: Ireland's total contribution to UNRWA in 2022 to €8m

Foreign Minister affairs, Simon Coveney, announced €2 million in additional support for the Palestinian people, following a meeting with Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, in Dublin today.

Funds will be allocated to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides essential services to the 5.7 million registered Palestinian refugees in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.

This brings Ireland's total contribution to UNRWA to €8 million in 2022, while the country's total aid to the Palestinian people will be €16.5 million so far this year.

Announcing the pledge, Minister Coveney said:

"I am happy to announce that UNRWA will get this additional financing. Ireland has consistently backed the organization's efforts with and on behalf of Palestinian refugees.

"UNRWA's work is still crucial and offers a lifeline to the most at-risk segments of the refugee community. With the support of this donation, UNRWA will be able to provide refugees in all of its operational areas with essential services like healthcare, education, humanitarian relief, and social services.

This includes Gaza, where common people are experiencing the effects of the continuous blockade and hostilities.

The Syria Regional Crisis Emergency Appeal by UNRWA provides for the basic human needs of Palestine refugees impacted by the Syrian war. This conflict has disproportionately affected Palestine refugees, with an estimated 438,000 UNRWA-registered refugees still present inside the nation, with about one third being children.

Last month, Coveney denounced an Israeli airstrike on Gaza that, according to local health officials, resulted in 12 fatalities, including a five-year-old girl, and more than 80 injuries.

The escalation in and around Gaza, as well as the effects of Israeli strikes on civilians, gravely disturbed Coveney.

Ireland called for de-escalation and the protection of civilians, as required by international humanitarian law, and he denounced "the indiscriminate fire of missiles from Gaza hurting civilians."
