At least three buildings collapsed, roads and bridges were damaged and train bogies derailed in Taiwan's sparsely populated southeast region on Sunday when a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck. According to the island's weather bureau, the epicenter was in Taitung County and followed a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in the same area on Saturday evening. No casualties were reported in either incident.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has urged people to be vigilant for further aftershocks in the coming hours. “Water and electricity supplies in some areas are also affected by the earthquake," she wrote on Facebook. “The related disaster relief work is in full swing."
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck Taiwan at 2:44 pm on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometres, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Taitung. Reports state that the jolt's initial magnitude was 7.2 before it was later lowered to 6.9.
A three-story 7-Eleven convenience store building collapsed in the Yuli township of Hualien as a result of the earthquake. According to the Hualien fire brigade, four persons who were trapped in the structure were freed. AFP reported this information. No one was inside two additional buildings that collapsed in the town. According to the report, two neighbouring bridges fell while another two sustained damage.
While the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the Japan Meteorological Agency both issued tsunami advisories shortly after the earthquake, both organisations eventually modified their signals to state that there was no danger from high waves.
A train derailed at Dongli station in Hualien, according to the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA).
