New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine and return to the path of talks, saying he should consider the issues of food and energy security faced by developing countries.
In a bilateral meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Uzbekistan's historic city of Samarkand, Modi reiterated the need for an early end to hostilities, talks and diplomacy. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since the summit held in New Delhi last December.
India has repeatedly called for an end to fighting in Ukraine and pushed for dialogue, while refraining from publicly criticizing Putin for the invasion that began in February. The Indian side has not voted against Russia at the UN and has repeatedly raised the impact of the Ukraine crisis on food and energy prices, particularly in vulnerable countries.
“I know that today's age is not [an age] of war. "We have discussed with you several times over the phone this issue of democracy, diplomacy and dialogue, which touches the whole world," Modi said in Hindi during his televised opening address to his meeting with Putin.
