IRELAND: The launch of the country's first satellite is a step closer following discussions held in the Cabinet meeting.
The satellite, EIRSAT-1, was designed, developed, built and tested at University College Dublin.
The Tánaiste has now been empowered to sign an Exchange of Letters with the European Space Agency on behalf of the Government.
Satellites launched by EU Member States under the ESA programme must be registered with the UN.

The letters will confirm to Ireland's recognition of EIRSAT-1 as an Irish mission and its intention to list it on the UN Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space.
In the coming months, the European Space Agency is anticipated to launch EIRSAT-1 from its base in French Guiana.
The Center for Space Research at UCD's flagship project is called EIRSAT-1, or Educational Irish Research Satellite 1.
