MEXICO CITY: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday named the country's tax authority chief Raquel Buenrostro as the next economy minister, a day after former minister Tatiana Clouthier resigned.
"She's done a great job (as tax authority chief)," Lopez Obrador said at a regular news conference, touting Buenrostro's experience in the public sector and master's degree in economics.
At the president's routine news conference on Thursday, former economy minister Clouthier announced her resignation, depriving her ministry of a crucial negotiator in the midst of trade conflicts with the United States and Canada. She did not give a reason for leaving the position.
In late 2019, Buenrostro was appointed head of the nation's tax agency, SAT. Friday, Lopez Obrador did not right away announce her replacement.
