The Central Bank of Ireland today launched a silver commemorative coin for the late Luke Kelly.

The coin was officially launched by President Michael D Higgins at Luke Kelly’s former school, St Laurence O’Toole National School in Dublin 1.

It is available to purchase from 2pm and retails at €64.99.

According to a Central Bank announcement, the issue is restricted to 3,000 coins with a one coin per transaction maximum.

It is the last coin in the Modern Musicians silver coin series, which also included Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott in the past.

Mark Cassidy, acting deputy governor of the central bank, stated: "We are honoured to issue this coin to honour the late and well-loved Luke Kelly.

We are incredibly thankful to the teachers and students at St. Laurence O'Toole National School for inviting us today for this momentous occasion. It is especially right to be at his former school for this launch.

"Generations of people in Ireland continue to hold Luke in high respect because of his impact on his musical contributions to Irish culture. This coin honours his memory and recognises his contributions to society.
