DUBLIN: Protesters call for the removal of barriers to abortion at a Dublin march marking the 10th anniversary of Savita Halappanavar's death.

Dublin: Thousands of people marched in Dublin to mark the 10th anniversary of Savita Halappanavar's death and demand changes to abortion laws.

Speaking at the Garden of Remembrance before the march took off, Orla O'Connor of the National Council of Women called for an end to the three-day wait before a woman can have an abortion and an end to the 12-week limit.

Former TD Ruth Coppinger was one of the keynote speakers at City Hall. Thousands rallied on Savita's 10th death anniversary. Thanks to Rosa - Socialist Feminist Movement and Ruth Coppinger for organizing this event. She compared the cause she was fighting in her own country to feminism around the world.

She warned women in her country not to retreat from the Roe v. Wade decision. Even legally available procedures may not be available to everyone,

Former Master of National Maternity Hospital Dr. Some hospitals don't provide them, and some counties don't have general practitioners who perform abortions, according to Peter Boylan.

There was also a petition to build a permanent memorial for Savitha  Halappanavar, (31) died in 2012 after being denied an abortion during an abortion at a hospital in Galway. It served as one of the impetuses for Ireland's 2018 referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment, which led to a significant liberalization of the country's abortion laws and essentially the end of the constitutional ban on abortion.

Medical abortion is permitted up to 12 weeks, but after that, abortion can still only be performed if the mother's life or health is in serious danger or if two medical professionals agree that the fetus has a fatal abnormality.

Eilís Mulroy , speaking for the Pro-Life Campaign, said it was "unfair and despicable" to call for a more drastic extension of Irish abortion law on the 10th anniversary of Halappanavar's death. This continues despite the relentless claims of pro-abortion activists that the unfortunate death was caused by medical error. Several independent assessments support the conclusion that Savita's death was caused by poorly controlled sepsis rather than a refusal to abort.

"For pro-abortion politicians and campaigners to call for a drastic extension of Ireland's existing strict abortion law ten years after it was passed is highly inappropriate, relying on myths and misconceptions," the statement said.

As the march moved down O'Connell Street, they staged a small protest in support of the women of Iran. Protesters visit the mural at Project Arts Center in Temple Bar,
