7 providers will raise their prices from today, October 1. From October 2022 the charges will work as follows.

  • €947 in mid 2017
  • €1063 in October 2018
  • €1005 in January 2019
  • €1044 in October 2019
  • 1013 in April 2020 
  • €1098 October 2020
  • €1274 Nov 2021
  • 1509 in May 2022
  • €1674 in August 2022
  • €2177 in October 2022

Here are some estimates of how long it will take for various electric appliances to cost you €1. (Using unit rate 43c)

  • Using a 10,000-watt electric shower for about 15 minutes
  • Keeping an immersion heater (3,000 watts) on for 45 minutes
  • Cooking in a 2,000-watt oven for about 1hr 10 min.
  • Cooking in a 1000W Microwave for 2 hr 20 min
  • Tumble Dryer – running for 2 hours min (will vary by model)
  • Ironing with a 1,500 watt iron for 1hr 50 min.
  • Using a dishwasher for about 2 hours (1,000 – 1,500 watts)
  • Watching a plasma TV (280 – 450 watts) – about 7 hours
  • Keeping a fridge-freezer (200 – 400 watts) on for about 9 hours
  • Using a laptop (20 – 50 watts) about 70 hours
  • Keep a 5 watt LED light bulb on for 470 hours

Some bills may be higher depending on tariffs, usage and time, visit your connection company's website to understand the time differences and use :-

  • An average annual electricity bill is €2177 or
  • Average €363 per 2 month bill.
  • €181 on average if you pay monthly by direct debit.

Of course - most homes will use more electricity in the winter than in the summer months due to things like heaters and tumble dryers. Electricity usage is estimated to be 36% higher in winter. So – if you pay your bills as they arrive – an average household can expect monthly electricity bills of around €117 in summer and around €246 in winter.

If you live in a rural area, expect to pay €30 to €50 more per year for average usage.

Flogas Energy

Flogas Energy is the latest company to announce an increase. Electricity bills will increase by 17 percent and gas bills by 23 percent from Wednesday, October 26. There will be no increase in standing charges this time. Flogas has high standing charges of up to €600 per year for electricity. The distributor has more than 25,000 customers.

This is the company's third price hike this year and will raise prices by €340 a year for electricity bills and around €395 for gas bills. When all the increases are added up, it adds €1,700 a year to people's electricity bills and €1,700 to their gas bills.

Electric Ireland

State-owned Electric Ireland is increasing residential electricity bills by 26.7 per cent and residential gas bills by 37.5 per cent from today. This is the fifth price hike from suppliers since last year. Parent group ESB reported a 10 per cent rise in operating profit to €679m last year. Dividends for the state more than halved to €126 million. Gas prices are now €1,100 more per year than before the price hike was imposed. The latest electricity hike will add €446 a year to the average household's bill. The latest increase will see gas prices rise by €516 a year.

Time-of-Use Rates: A day may be split into 3 time-bands

  • Peak: 5pm - 7pm (the most expensive time)
  • Day: 8am - 5pm and 7pm - 11pm (with prices similar to the flat tariff)
  • Night: 11pm - 8am (the cheapest time)

Prepaypower

Gas prices will rise by 29 percent and electricity prices by 19 percent from Prepaypower today. When the new increase is implemented, the average annual cost of electricity for consumers will increase by 700 euros. This means that a PrepayPower customer's annual electricity costs will be close to €2,000. A year's gas costs will increase by 900 euros.

This is PrepayPower's third price hike so far this year. The price was raised twice last year. The company has 170,000 electricity customers and 60,000 gas customers.

Community Power

Community Power customers will see their bills increase by 38 percent from today. This means an increase of 60.46 euros per month according to annual estimates. Community Power's efforts to increase generating capacity at its community-owned solar farms were "hampered by unexpected delays last year".

Board Gas Energy

Bord Gas Energy is riding the highest highs seen in this market. Electricity price will be increased by 34 percent from tomorrow. This will add an additional €579 per year to the average annual electricity bill. Gas increases by 39 percent, adding €525 a year to the cost of fuel for households. Standing charges will not be increased.

This is the second time this year that Bord Gas has increased the price of electricity and gas. Taking all the increases into account, households will pay €1,300 more for their electricity and €1,100 more for gas.

Energy

The price of electricity and gas will be increased from next Friday. In this move, the price of electricity is increasing by 29 percent this time. Gas prices are rising by 39 percent, with a typical household spending an extra €511 a year on fuel consumption and an extra €520 a year.

Dual-fuel customers face a 33 percent increase, adding €1,030 to annual costs for heating and lighting. Customers on smart tariffs will not see any increase in night charges and no increase in standing charges.

This is the second price hike for Energia this year. Last year there was an increase of three. There are about 220,000 domestic customers. Taking into account the five increases, households will pay over €1,200 for electricity and over €1,000 a year for gas.

SSE Airtricity

From today, October 1, electricity charges will increase by more than 35 percent and gas prices by 39 percent. SSE Airtricity's latest increase will see its 250,000 customers increase electricity costs by around €600 a year. The price was increased three times last year. All of these price increases mean SSE Airtricity customers will pay €1,000 more for their gas and €1,100 more for electricity each year.

Last year SSE Airtricity Ireland paid a €115m dividend to its UK parent company.
