Between 400 and 500 jobs will be created following the announcement by Pfizer of a €1.2 billion investment at its Grange Castle site in Dublin.
It will bring the total number of Pfizer employees in Ireland to approximately 5,500.
The announcement comes after a €40 million investment in the facility last year, when it joined the Pfizer Covid-19 production network on a worldwide scale.
The project, which is Pfizer's largest expansion investment in Ireland to date, will see the construction of a new facility on the property, doubling the plant's ability to produce biological medicinal substances.
With the investment and new jobs, manufacturing and laboratory capacity will be greatly increased, and new technologies will be added.
The project is currently in the preliminary design stage, and it is anticipated that construction will start on site in 2024 and end with the opening of the new facility in 2027.
Pfizer's chief global supply officer, Mike McDermott, stated that Grange Castle has been essential to the company's global Covid-19 vaccination network and that the investment will aid in enhancing the site's extensive and powerful capabilities.
One of the first pharmaceutical companies to establish a presence in Ireland was Pfizer in 1969. Its total capital investment in Ireland exceeds $9 billion, with plants spread over 5 locations in Cork, Dublin, and Kildare.
