The greatest aid package to Kyiv to far, according to the White House, was $3 billion in military support announced by the US on Friday.
The assistance, which will be described in more detail by the Pentagon, is anticipated to include Bradley infantry combat vehicles, MRAPs and other personnel carriers, and self-propelled howitzers, according to press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
The previous day, both Washington and Berlin made vague announcements about providing armoured vehicles — Bradleys from the United States and Marders from Germany.
Berlin announced on Friday that it would send roughly 40 Marder vehicles to Ukraine within a few weeks, along with instruction on how to use them.
They will provide Ukrainian forces more firepower, as will the Bradleys, which typically have a 25 mm autocannon, a 7.62 mm machine gun, and anti-tank missiles.
The Bradleys "are very critical in terms of being able to undertake what we call combined weapons manoeuvre warfare," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. The Pentagon has indicated it will train Kyiv's soldiers in this area.
According to Kirby, the vehicles are "quite closely related to the fight that we're currently witnessing on the ground and what we believe we'll see throughout the winter months."
The Bradley is "not a tank, but it's a tank killer," according to Brigadier General Pat Ryder, spokesman for the Pentagon, who stated this the day before.
He continued, "We're convinced that it will help them on the battlefield.
Ukraine has long advocated for more powerful weapons that would support its operations, such as tanks. Western countries have been hesitant to send them due to concerns that they would escalate the conflict or antagonise Russia.
However, the Ukrainians have gained strength, and Western countries have increased the amount of weapons they give to them.
After France pledged to deploy its AMX-10 RC light tanks, which are wheeled rather than tracked but share the much heavier cannon typical of a tank, the US and Germany made their declaration regarding the armoured vehicles.
The French action increased political pressure on Germany to assist Ukraine further.
Germany also declared on Thursday that it will provide a Patriot missile battery to Ukraine in addition to the US, which means Kyiv's forces will get two of the cutting-edge air defence systems.
