Monterey: 10 people were killed in a shooting at Monterey Park in California.
Many people were injured. The shooting took place near the site of the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration. The shooter was 72-year-old Huy Can Tran. The assailant opened fire with a machine gun during a New Year event where tens of thousands of people had gathered.
26-year-old Brandon Tsay wrestled a gun away from the Monterey Park shooter at a second location just minutes after the gunman killed at least 11 people and injured 9 more.

Reports state that the assailant shot himself dead after the police surrounded the vehicle the assailant was traveling in. The suspect in the shooting that killed 10 people in California shot himself to death in his van after being surrounded by police, police say.
