UK: Athira Anilkumar (25), a Malayalee student from Thiruvananthapuram, died in an accident

UK: While waiting for a bus in 22 nd February 2023 morning at Leeds,  a car ran into a Malayali student and died on the spot. Two people remain in hospital with serious injuries.

Athira (25), a native of Attingal, Kerala state and a student of the project management course that started last month, died in the UK. Athira, who came down to go to college in the morning, reached the bus stop before the speeding car hit her and got into an accident.

One of the other passengers at the bus stop is in critical condition in the hospital. The woman who drove the car was arrested. According to eyewitnesses, Athira died on the spot, although rescue operations were carried out in the air ambulance.

Initially there was a report that there were two other Malayali students with Athira, but later it was confirmed that they were passengers who were waiting at the bus stop. Athira shared a room with other Malayali students. Athira is the wife of Rahul Shekhar who works in Oman. They have a one and a half year old child. Athira left the child with her parents and came to UK for studies.

Athira's close relative, who lives in Leeds, has contacted the police following the incident. Since it was a car accident, efforts have been made to complete the post-mortem process quickly and release the body. Meanwhile, after learning that the Malayali student died in the accident, officials from the Indian Embassy in London assured that follow-up will be done quickly.

Local residents say that cars speeding on this road is a regular sight as there is no speed limit. People who live on the opposite side of the road where the accident happened say that young people drive cars and bikes dangerously here. The angry locals also complain that many people are driving at the speed of a Formula One car on the track without looking ahead. The demand to install speed cameras here is also very old. Yesterday, various newspapers reported quoting local residents that there were two other accidents similar to Athira.
