Many consumers in Ireland were left in the dark after last day's scary bill after a huge mistake on their electricity and gas bills. Many customers are facing difficulties due to issues related to various services.
Two major energy suppliers, Electric Ireland and Bord Gas Network, have discovered billing errors that have affected some of their customers. The networks said it was due to a banking "error". Some of its customers were charged twice as much by Bord Gas as direct debit payments on their bills, while others never received a bill at all.
Meanwhile Electric Ireland has failed to send bills to thousands of customers. The Bord Gas issue arose after several customers reported double charges yesterday, and the supplier says it is working with bank AIB to investigate. It's not known how many customers were affected by the fault with Bord Gas, which has more than 730,000 residential and business customers across the country. However, they said they are working with AIB to rectify the error as soon as possible so that the payment can be returned to their accounts.
Electric Ireland, which has around 1.1 million customers, said the billing glitch had caused some customers to be charged "wrong rates". Electric Ireland says it has affected "less than 1%" of electricity customers. We are working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible and affected customers will be credited on their bills in due course. Electric Ireland says.
