Dublin, Louth and Mayo will have local road closures in Ireland this week due to US President Joe Biden's visit. US President Biden begins his 5-day visit to Belfast on Monday. Biden, 80, will fly to Belfast on Air Force One on Tuesday.
There will be 500 gardaà on duty in Dublin alone, 200 armed and 400 undercover officers on the island during the four-day visit.
Some of his travel during his visit to Ireland will be in a Marine Corps One helicopter. Security arrangements for the flight are being finalised. Sources say it is still not confirmed whether it will be stored at Shannon or Dublin Airport
Tuesday, April 11 - Belfast
Biden will land in Belfast on Air Force One on Tuesday evening, arriving on his transatlantic flight from Joint Base Andrews, an air force base near Washington, DC. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to receive him as he disembarks.
Wednesday 12th April - Visit Dublin and Louth
Sunak will meet at a Belfast city center hotel where he is staying for an overnight visit to Northern Ireland.
Gardai say traffic and crowd management plans will be in place at events. Gardaà said traffic restrictions would be kept to the "necessary minimum" during the visit and that the intended impact would be "local and minimal".
As well as road closures for the events, motorists are being told to expect "temporary rolling road closures to facilitate safety escorts".
Thursday 13th April - Friday 14th April
Biden will arrive and depart from Dublin Airport at various times during the week, but normal operations at the airport will not be affected. However, people using the airport are being asked to allow extra time to arrive, especially late Wednesday and early Friday, as the rolling road is likely to be closed.
Parking restrictions are currently in place in Dublin city center and will remain in place until Saturday. On Wednesday, Biden's visit will be primarily to Louth, with visits to Dublin's Phoenix Park and Dublin's south city center on Thursday. Phoenix Park will be closed for 24 hours from 5pm on Wednesday to 5pm on Thursday. All gates, including the pedestrian gates, will be closed during this period, the OPW said.
Dublin Zoo in the park will also be temporarily closed for visits. Staff are accredited and ensure animals are cared for” and “closed affected tickets will be fully refunded”.
On Friday, the visit will be mostly in County Mayo. Biden will arrive and depart Mayo via Ireland West Airport. Gardai have asked for extra time when traveling to the airport.
People traveling in the affected areas are being asked to plan their journeys, anticipate traffic disruptions or delays and co-operate with gardaÃ. Gardaà say they have engaged with public transport providers to minimize disruption to services.
