Today is Oshana Sunday. The day commemorates Jesus' last visit to Jerusalem before his crucifixion. As he humbly entered Jerusalem on a colt, the crowds greeted him with cheers. It is in memory of this that today is called "Oshana Sunday".
Oshana Sunday: The Sunday was often named after these substitute trees, as in Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday. In Syriac Christianity it is often called Oshana Sunday or Hosanna Sunday based on the biblical words uttered by the crowd while Jesus entered Jerusalem.
Oshana is a word that we hear constantly in the church and in the prayer meeting. What does this mean?
This word, which Christians use with great importance in their prayer life, is borrowed from Hebrew, the language of Israel, where Jesus lived. This was part of the prayer of the people of Israel. That is why the word appears so many times in the psalms that were their prayer songs.
In Malayalam, oshana and hosana are pronounced differently, but both originate from the same word and carry the same meaning. The Hebrew word 'Hoshia-na' evolved into Oshana in Malayalam. The equivalent word for this is 'Oshana'. The root meaning of this word is 'save' / 'help'...May we all be able to accept Jesus as the Messiah in our hearts, homes, church and society this Oshana Sunday.
