Dublin Airport night flights to be reduced: Fingal County Council

Fingal County Council has ordered a reduction in the number of night flights at Dublin Airport within six weeks.

Fingal County Council has issued an enforcement notice to the DAA to reduce the number of night flights at Dublin Airport. The enforcement notice is to reduce the number of flights at the airport to 65 between 11 pm and 7 am. The notice issued on July 28 gave the airport operator six weeks to comply with the notice. The council said the notice was issued following complaints about night flights at the airport.

The planning authority investigated a breach of condition 5 of planning permission for the north runway at Dublin Airport. When Dublin Airport was granted permission for the new runway, condition 5 was imposed, stipulating that the number of flights between 11pm and 7am should not exceed 65.

It was set up to restrict the frequency of night flights at the airport "in order to protect residential facilities, taking into account information submitted in relation to future night-time use". The council issued the notice after an investigation. It must reduce the number of flights within six weeks and pay the council costs for costs and expenses in connection with the investigation.

If the abatement is not complied with within six weeks, or if the council grants an extension of six months, the notice states, "action may be taken including entering the land and removing, demolishing or altering anything." It says DAA will be guilty of failure to comply with the notice.

In a statement, DA said it was disappointed with the decision and was given only six weeks to limit flights. The statement called for "unduly burdensome conditions" approved by the council, available under Fingal County Council's planning rules, to be suspended or granted for at least six months. "This will avoid unnecessary disruptions to people's travel plans and airlines' cargo operations," says DAA CEO Kenny Jacobs.
