Non-resident Adults and children can now take Aadhaar very transparently

Aadhaar card is an identification document issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It also serves as proof of address.

Can an NRI apply for Aadhaar?

Yes. An NRI (whether minor or adult) with a valid Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar from any Aadhaar Centre.

I am an NRI and I have Aadhaar. Can I enroll my spouse based on my Aadhaar and passport?

If spouse is NRI – Valid Indian passport of applicant is mandatory as Proof of Identity (PoI).

If spouse is an Indian resident (not NRI) – any valid relationship document (SEE MORE:  https://uidai.gov.in/)  including your passport (with spouse's name) is used for enrollment under Head of Family (HoF).

Can I use my passport for my spouse's Aadhaar update?

If your spouse's name is on your passport, you can use it as proof of their address.


Non-residents can also apply for Aadhaar. Non-residents have the same procedures for obtaining Aadhaar as for residents of India. It also requires entering biometric and birth information. The Aadhaar card consists of fingerprints, pupil scans and photographs collected during the Aadhaar enrollment process.

Procedures for obtaining Aadhaar for non-residents are detailed below.

1. Visit the Aadhaar Centre

2. Passport should be kept in hand

3. Enter the required information in the enrollment application form.

4. Email ID must be provided by non-residents. 

5. Affidavit in enrollment of expatriates is somewhat different. After reading it, sign it.

6. Tell the staff at the Aadhaar center that you need to include the information that you are a non-resident in your information.

7. Passport itself can be given as proof of address, date of birth or any other document can be given as proof.

8. Biometric information may be provided.

9. Ensure correctness of information provided in local language and English. After this the application can be submitted.

10. Don't forget to buy Enrollment Slip with 14 Digit Enrollment ID. 

Procedures for obtaining Aadhaar for children of non-residents are detailed below.

Children under five years of age

1. One of the parents must authenticate on behalf of the child and sign the Enrollment Form to consent to the enrollment of the minor.

2. In case the child is a non-resident it is mandatory to provide a valid Indian passport of the child as proof of identity

3. If the child is a resident of India (non-resident) then the birth certificate and Aadhaar of the parents should be produced for enrollment to provide valid proof of relationship.

Children aged five to 18 years

1. One of the parents/guardian must consent to enroll the minor child by signing the enrollment form.

2. In case the child is a non-resident it is mandatory to provide a valid Indian passport of the child as proof of identity.

  3. If the minor is a resident of India (not NRI) and there is no document in the name of the minor then the birth certificate can be used as a valid proof of relationship.

4. A valid identification document in the name of the child and proof of address (such as school ID card) can be used for enrollment.

It should be noted that international or non-Indian mobile numbers are not accepted by UIDAI when non-residents apply for Aadhaar. Therefore, it should be ensured that an Indian mobile number is entered in the application.
