Dublin: An investigation has been launched after a man died in an explosion at a homeless shelter in Dublin city center yesterday afternoon. Participated in investigation including bomb squad. Defense Force explosives experts were called to the site near Capel Street in Dublin yesterday evening.
Dublin Fire Brigade and other emergency services were the first to respond to the incident in Little Britain Street from 3.15pm. Firefighters and advanced paramedics from Phibsborough, Tara Street and North Strand fire stations responded and brought the incident under control by 3.35pm.
The assistance of ESB Networks and Gas Networks Ireland was also requested to the scene. A garda spokeswoman said one man was fatally injured in the incident. No other injuries were reported. The spokesman added that there were earlier reports of an explosion inside the building, which houses a homeless shelter. A number of persons were there at that time.
Initial investigations by Garda forensic experts led to the Army's explosives experts being called in to examine the items found in the room. Located on Little Britain St, Dublin, the hostel is run by DePaul Charity. A hostel resident said a wall separating the women's and men's sections was damaged in the blast. DePaul said they are working with DRHE and other partner NGOs to accommodate other residents of the hostel.
Gardaà are investigating the exact cause of the explosion. The Garda Technical Bureau will examine the scene. There were several traffic restrictions between Green Street and Capel Street in connection with the incident.
