Galway: In Ireland, a military chaplain was stabbed outside Renmore Barracks in Galway on Thursday night, August 15.
The Army Chaplain Fr. Paul Murphy remains in hospital in critical condition. A teenager is being questioned by gardaà in connection with the incident. Chaplin underwent surgery. However, the Irish media revealed that the danger has not been overcome.
Members of the defense force fired warning shots and detained the teenager at the scene, before gardaà arrested the teenager. Being a military barracks, the assailant was very likely to be shot dead at that time and the guard would have been justified in doing so.
"I heard like three high-powered shots. I live near the barracks, so hearing gunshots would not be unusual because there is a firing range behind the barracks. But it was getting dark, "and then I immediately heard sirens, which is unusual," said the local resident.
In a post on Facebook, Father Murphy said: "Friends, thank you for your prayers, love and care. I can't answer all the messages and take all the calls that come my way, sorry." Paul Murphy apologized.
Irish President Michael D. Higgins described the incident as a shocking incident. Shek Simon Harris said he had been informed of the inquiry by Justice Minister Helen McEntrey. Defense Minister Michael Martin also condemned the violent attack on the priest. He appreciated the defense personnel who were on duty at the time.
A terror attack is being investigated after a teenager was arrested following the incident. A garda statement said the Special Detective Unit was involved in the investigation into the incident, which happened at Renmore Barracks at around 10.45pm, and that a joint investigation was being carried out to establish whether the attack was terrorist-motivated.
If gardaà establish that the attack was "somewhat politically motivated" and that there were "personal motives" behind the attack, "it will reduce the need for a security review". He is currently in custody at a Garda station in the North Western Region and has been remanded in custody. Gardaà believe the incident was not part of a wider conspiracy.
In a statement, the Defense Force confirmed that an incident took place at the barracks and officers on duty fired warning shots "in accordance with Force Protection protocols after an assault on a male civilian Defense Force member".
The 16-year-old accused of stabbing an army chaplain in Renmore on Thursday night, who cannot be named for legal reasons because he is a minor, appeared before Judge Gerard Furlong in the juvenile sitting at Galway District Court this afternoon.
Gardaà told the court that the accused did not respond to the allegations. Gardaà opposed the bail application citing the "seriousness of the offence". Judge Furlong refused bail. The teenager was remanded to the Oberstown Children's Detention Campus. He will appear in court again next Tuesday, August 20 via video link.
