Imphal: A woman was killed during Kuki-Meitei clashes in conflict-ridden Manipur. Nemjakhol Hangdim (46) was killed in a clash in Thangba village of Kangpokpi district on Sunday night.
The attackers set fire to many houses. The police said that the locals were fleeing into the forest. It is also reported that both sides threw bombs at each other during the encounter. Protesters also attacked a CRPF team on Monday night.
There was a lot of tension in the Raj Bhavan and Secretariat marches led by the students the other day. 12 people were injured. The protesters pelted stones at the Raj Bhavan and the Secretariat and attacked a CRPF convoy. Protesters hoisted Meitei flag at Thoubal Collectorate. The collector denied the propaganda that this was done by removing the national flag.
Police fired tear gas and lathi charge. The student agitation raised demands such as the resignation of all Meithei and Naga MLAs of Manipur, the transfer of the DGP and the security adviser, the transfer of the charge of the Unified Command to Chief Minister Birensingh, and the maintenance of regional integrity of Manipur.
Women then took to the streets in Imphal's Thangmeiband to protest the continued violence in Manipur. It is learned that a senior military officer who visited the state has recommended to the Center to withdraw the Assam Rifles from the Kuki majority areas and deploy the CRPF.
A rally was held in various districts under the leadership of Kuki women demanding the withdrawal of the Assam Rifles. The Assam Rifles prevent Meitei extremists from infiltrating Kuki districts. They currently constitute 70 percent of the security forces in Kuki areas.
The Kukis hold up because they are less armed compared to the Meiteis because they have Assam Rifles. The Kukis are worried that if they are withdrawn, genocide will take place.
