The final transfer of responsibility for renewing Irish immigration permits from the Gardaà to Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) will take place today, Justice Minister Helen McEntrie has announced.
The new move to "civilize" immigration services is in line with recommendations by the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland. Minister McEntrie said the transfer of responsibility allows gardaà to focus their time on "the more operational and enforcement aspects of their immigration work, such as investigations and deportations".
“As part of the 2025 budget, I have allocated an additional package of €25m for investment in the immigration system. "Within this, €5 million has been allocated for investment in digital systems to upgrade existing systems," she said.
Immigration permits due to expire from November 4 can now be renewed online via the ISD web portal and applicants do not need to attend their local garda station. The online renewal service was previously only available to residents of Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick, Meath and Wicklow.
Transfers are a centralized system operated by the Department of Justice to manage immigration services. As part of the planned system, applicants will be able to see all their interactions with immigration services on one platform.
