The South Australian government has unveiled a new facility in the fight against tomato virus, an infectious disease that is wreaking havoc on the industry.
“Until now, farmers in South Australia have had to be sent to another state to have the tests done, causing delays in getting the tests back to farmers as soon as possible. But the new facility, the first testing facility to help combat Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus, will ensure results are available within 48 hours.
The discovery of the virus at Perfection Fresh in Wales last month led to the lockdown of three production facilities, and other growers had to prove their produce was virus-free. "The three affected properties were difficult and PIRSA (Primary Industries and Regions South Australia) is continuing to work with them," Primary Industries Minister Claire Scriven said.
With improved testing protocols in place, Western Australia and Queensland are expected to soon join South Australian tomatoes in adoption.
