Akshaya Bhargava has been appointed as the new Chair and Governor of Bank of Ireland, the bank has announced. Bhargava, a fintech founder with deep ties to India, will officially take over on January 1, 2025 from Patrick Kennedy, who has held the position since 2018.
The Bank of Ireland Group expressed confidence in Bhargava's ability to lead the bank to its next phase of growth. His appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strengthen the Bank's commitment to innovation and excellence in service delivery.
He has been a member of the Board of Bank of Ireland Group since January 2024. His background in fintech and extensive experience in the financial sector are seen as an important step for the bank in navigating the evolving landscape of digital banking and financial services.
Outgoing Chair and Governor Patrick Kennedy praised his leadership over the past six years. Under his tenure, the bank experienced significant growth and transformation to adapt to the new regulatory environment and technological advancements.
After spending 22 years at Citibank in various roles, he left Citibank in 2002 to take over as the founding CEO of Infosys BPO Ltd (formerly known as Progeon Ltd), leading the company to its sale in 2006. He served as CEO of Mitsubishi UFG (formerly known as Butterfield Fulcrum Group) from 2007 to 2010 before acquiring MUFG and founded and served as CEO of State Street Managed Account Services (formerly known as Infrahedge Limited) since 2010. This was before the acquisition of State Street Bank and Trust in 2014 and 2013. Akshaya, who served as CEO of Global Wealth and Investment Management at Barclays plc between 2014 and 2017, founded fintech firm BridgeWeave in 2018.
Bhargava's connection with India is particularly noteworthy. He was instrumental in bringing millions of new investors into the market. His work focuses on educating and empowering early stage investors, youth and women in India
