The latest strain, a combination of KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants, is thought to be more widespread due to its many mutations. The Health Protection Surveillance Center reported that XEC stained 7.1% of officially recorded Covid cases in Ireland over the past five weeks. The XEC strain accounts for one in ten confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.
