E-scooters will not be allowed on public transport in Ireland from tomorrow : NTA; Disagrees with ban: Dublin Commuter Coalition

Dublin:  From tomorrow, e-scooters will not be allowed on public transport in Ireland. The ban will affect all public transport services operating under the NTA, including Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Iarnród Éireann, Luas and other local services.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) took the decision following concerns that batteries used in e-scooters could catch fire. The ban will be enforced by individual transport operators. But NTA will periodically review the policy.

These batteries, known as lithium-ion batteries, can sometimes overheat or develop internal malfunctions. This could lead to fire. Public transport operators across the country, including buses and trains, will implement the ban, the NTA said in a statement. This rule even applies to foldable e-scooters. However, this does not affect e-bikes or mobility scooters. They will continue to be allowed. The NTA stated that such vehicles have been regulated for a long time and their batteries do not pose the same level of risk.

However, do not agree with the ban. The Dublin Commuter Coalition expressed concern that the ban would force more people to drive, as many commuters use e-scooters as a way to travel the last distance between public transport stops and their destinations.

One of the main concerns about e-scooters is the location of their batteries. They are located on the platform and are vulnerable to damage. The NTA noted that there have already been fires involving e-scooters on public transport systems in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona. Similar bans are in place in several European cities such as Berlin and Barcelona, as well as across the UK.
