A series of lunchtime strikes by trade unions representing health workers will become more complicated in the coming days as part of a dispute over staff shortages and pay in Ireland Health sector.
The HSE described the move as "regrettable" against the backdrop of additional funding for the health service. Demonstrations were held at Cork University Hospital and Health Service Executive headquarters in Dublin in the early days of October.
The group of trade unions, which includes the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO), Forsa and SIPTU, says ongoing recruitment restrictions in the health sector are putting too much pressure on patient services.
Unions said the HSE's recruitment moratorium meant thousands of unfilled vacancies were effectively eliminated, resulting in staff shortages harming patient care. From October 14, INMO and Fórsa members will ballot for industrial action.
"Employees want to work safely. Nursing directors have been stripped of their authority to recruit where they see gaps and where they see need. I think the focus is now on the financial side as opposed to patient safety. That's the same for working health workers. Now. The recruitment moratorium has not been lifted in July and the restricted limits are in place," he said. The HSE has decided to eliminate all physically unfilled posts, and according to our estimates, there are only 2,000 vacancies in the nursing and midwifery professions that cannot be filled, says INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Shegda.
The ICTU group of healthcare unions includes representatives from INMO, SIPTU, Fórsa, the Irish Medical Organisation, Unite, Connect and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists. The Unite trade union, which represents a range of grades across the HSE, has announced it will launch a series of lunchtime protests next week and ballot its members for industrial action. This will increase tensions in various hospitals in the coming weeks as nurses and other healthcare workers, among others, go on strike. And the unions started sending emails to the members informing them of this.
