Trudeau's behaviour "cavalier" : India ; Trudeau joins other countries

On Wednesday, India again hit back angrily and called Trudeau's behaviour "cavalier". A cavalier has a dismissive attitude and treats others as inferior.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a press conference that Canada has not provided us with any evidence to support the serious allegations it has chosen to make against India and Indian diplomats.

"Prime Minister Trudeau will be solely responsible for the damage this cavalier behaviour has done to India-Canada relations."

Trudeau had criticized India's response to the inquiry into Nijjar's killing in his comments before the investigation into foreign interference in Canadian politics.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar strongly supported and openly campaigned for the Khalistan movement demanding a separate Sikh homeland. In June 2023, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead by unknown assailants in Surrey, British Columbia. Canadian police have registered a case against four Indian nationals in Nijjar's death. This led the Trudeau government to call it Indian murder.

India denied the allegation and demanded proof. At that time, Canada's intelligence was not with hard evidence and still India demanded proof, they instead blamed the Indian embassies. With that, India reacted strongly and protested. The Indian Embassy in Canada has been shut down and the Canadian Embassy here has been closed.

According to Trudeau, he was briefed on the killing that summer and received intelligence that was "incredibly clear" that India was involved in the killing. Trudeau said the killing was a serious violation of Canada's sovereignty and international rule of law.

But in a shock admission during a public inquiry on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that Canada does not have "hard evidence" to support allegations that Indian government agents were linked to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year.

Another Canadian ally, the US, said India was not cooperating with Canadian authorities as the White House had hoped.

"Obviously, they have not chosen that path. We have made it clear that the allegations are very serious, that they need to be taken seriously, and that we would like to see the Indian government cooperate with Canada's investigation," spokesman Matthew Miller said at a US State Department briefing on Tuesday.

Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said Ottawa maintains close ties with the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
