SINGAPORE / NEW DELHI — Singapore Airlines (SIA) is pushing for stricter safeguards, performance benchmarks, and enhanced management influence before committing to any additional financial support for Air India.
The move comes as the Indian carrier seeks approximately $1.5 billion in fresh equity from its primary backers following a massive $2.33 billion loss recorded for the financial year.
Singapore Airlines, which holds a 25.1% stake in the merged carrier following the integration of Vistara, faces mounting pressure from investors as the heavy financial drain directly impacts the group's overall profitability.
Under the proposed conditions, SIA is expected to demand stronger voting rights on the board and definitive targets to curb ongoing losses.
While majority owner Tata Sons navigates the complex, multi-year turnaround of the airline—which executives warn could take up to a decade—Singapore Airlines maintains that any further capital allocation will be strictly evaluated through its disciplined internal framework.
