New Delhi: CPI-M politburo member Brinda Karat said that the Supreme Court's verdict declaring "bulldozer raj illegal" is welcome.
The only disappointment is that the verdict didn't come a little sooner. If it had, many people in BJP-ruled states would not have become victims of "bulldozer raj". Brinda said that with the verdict, justice has been served to the minorities and the poor who are victims of BJP attacks.
The Supreme Court had banned the use of bulldozers to demolish the houses of the accused in the case. The law does not allow demolition of convicts' houses. It is completely unconstitutional to implement such things. The Supreme Court also stated that if the houses are to be vacated for any reason, a notice must be given legally.
Courts have the power to determine whether a person is guilty. Governments have no power to punish. The government is encroaching on the power of the courts. A landmark judgment by a bench comprising Justices Bhushan R Gavai and KV Viswanathan said that the government has no power to implement a judgment not pronounced by the court.
