An FIR has been registered against Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and Sohail Iqbal, the son of local SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood, in connection with the violent protests that erupted on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district. The protests were in opposition to a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, a Mughal-era mosque. Barq and Sohail have been accused of inciting the violence, which led to the deaths of four people and left several others injured.
District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya and Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi addressed the media on Monday, stating that the situation had been brought under control since Sunday afternoon. Authorities announced plans to identify the rioters through video footage, with those responsible to be arrested and jailed. A total of seven FIRs have been filed in relation to the incident. Barq and Iqbal are named in the FIRs, along with six other individuals, in addition to over 2,750 unnamed suspects.
Tensions had been rising in Sambhal since Tuesday, when a civil court ordered a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid following a petition alleging that the mosque was built after demolishing a Hindu temple in 1529. An initial survey of the mosque was conducted on the same day.
